The Society is premiering today a new video resource on Baptist Identity featuring Dr. Bill J. Leonard, Founding Dean and Emeritus Professor at the Wake Forest University School of Divinity in Winston-Salem, NC. The video is entitled “Hopeful Apocalypse: Charting a Baptist Future” and focuses on many of the significant changes which have taken place within American Christianity in the last fifty years. Dr. Leonard asks:

  • What does the changing sociology of Sunday mean for the Church of the 21st century?
  • How do 21st century Baptists make a case for a Believers’ Church?
  • Why are Americans distancing themselves from churches in significant numbers?
  • How are religious experiences articulated and passed on to new generations?
  • Can Protestants make a gospel case without culture-privilege?

Also included are suggestions on ways Baptist congregations can respond positively with strategies for the future in order to meet the challenges of the new day in which we live, including the “retelling of the Jesus story.”The video was recorded before a live audience on the campus of Wake Forest University and is designed for individual study, Sunday School classes, small group discussions, webinars, and large group presentations. A brief question and answer period follows the presentation and a discussion guide is available to encourage reflection and discussion. The Baptist History and Heritage Society is grateful to the following organizations whose generous gifts make this video resource possible:
